Community Medicine (P.S.M.)

  • Established in the year of 1965 and founded by Dr. V.N. Panse (1966-72) the department of Community Medicine has come a long way in teaching, training, research and patient care activities.  
  • Since the birth of the department, Dr. V.N. Panse (1966-72), Dr. Meenal Kekare (1972-80), Dr. Gopa Kothari (1980-1990), Dr. PSN Reddy (1990-2000), and Dr. Daksha Pandit (2000-2008) & the present Head Dr. R.M. Chaturvedi (2008 onwards) have shaped the department to the present glory.
  • The Department of Community Medicine is actively involved in betterment of people’s health, through its comprehensive health care approach, the pillars of which are preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative health care services and research activities.
  • The department imparts medical education to undergraduate, post graduate and paramedical students in Community Medicine and Public Health.
  • Training, monitoring & evaluation of the Interns: an essential component of the department.
  • Department offers comprehensive health care services to the people in Dharavi Slums through its Urban Health Centre, established in 1981, which is  attached to LTMMC & GH and is situated at ‘60 feet road, Dharavi’, one of the biggest slum in Asia.
  • It has gone beyond the four walls of the hospitals to extend its services to rural and tribal population through its Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), at Vaitarna, Tq. Shahapur, Dist. Thane. Rural Health Training Centre Vaitarna was started on 19th January 2009 in collaboration with Hydraulic Engineers division, Vaitarna, with the aim of providing routine and emergency 24 X 7 healthcare services to MCGM employees and their family members and also to the villagers nearby. RHTC was established according to the guidelines of Medical council of India (MCI) as one of the mandatory requirement of Medical College.
  • Under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP. The dept. has been managing a Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (Satellite Disease Surveillance Unit) in collaboration with public health dept. of MCGM for surveillance of monsoon related diseases.
  • In Public Private Partnership (PPP), collaboration with the Centre for the Study Social Change (CSSC), Bandra (E), has led to the active action based projects in the community. 
  • Another example of PPP, collaboration with HDIL Ltd., a construction giant, to make the workers healthy leading to increase productivity.
  • Training of all categories of staff members of LTMGH on issues related to HIV/AIDS is undertaken.
  • Health Education is integral part of all the programmes undertaken by the department.
  • The department imparts comprehensive school health services in the private schools.
  • The department is conducting a weekend certificate course in Leadership in Public Health Management which has affiliation with MUHS, Avni Health Foundation and Alabama University at Birmingham and Vanderbilt University in the USA.
  • In collaboration with the MUHS, Nashik, two courses in Epidemiology, Basic & Advanced, are launched in the department.
