The department of urology, LTMMC & LTMH Sion was established on 1st January 1978. It was the first urology department among the three municipal medical colleges in Mumbai. The department has a separate OPD & a 40 bedded ward.  Lithotripsy facilities and instruments for Endourology were also acquired. On 15th July 1980 recognition was granted by the University of Bombay for the degree of M.Ch. Urology. Three registrations were granted as there were three teachers namely Dr.S.D.Bapat, Dr.R.M.Prabhu and Dr.C.T.Patel. From 1991 to Sept.2004 the department was headed by Dr.V.D.Trivedi  & then from Oct.2004 to July 2009 Dr.Sujata Patwardhan. Currently the department is headed by Prof. Jayesh V Dhabalia.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  To deal with the increasing influx of patients, urology OPD was conducted twice weekly and then thrice weekly. The first kidney transplant was performed in Bombay in 1977 and subsequently a regular transplant programme was established at LTMG Hospital. A separate Impotence and Infertility OPD was established in 1992.

The annual OPD attendance is 7600 patients and the operative procedures are 1450 patients per year. Urology Department of LTMGH also provides medical cover to Half Way Home established by the Paraplegia Foundation.

Since 1993 PCNL has been carried out regularly. Various sub-specialties of Urology like adult and pediatric reconstructive urology, Female Urology, Uro-oncology, Endourology, infertility & impotence counseling services are well established.

The department of urology has been carrying out live related kidney transplantation regularly. On 27th March 1997, the first cadaver kidney transplantation in the state of Maharashtra was carried out by us. Till date we have done 14 cadaver transplants and LTMGH is designated as the Zonal Co-Ordination Centre for Cadaver Transplant in Maharashtra. We have a separate transplant OPD on every Saturday. The yearly intake of M.Ch. students is Four.

The department of Urology have Holmium Laser machine, flexible endoscopy, ESWL machine, 2 C-arm machines, Endovision camera, TRUS machine, Laparoscopy set, Uroflowmeter for the better service to patients and better training to students.
