THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE

The Department of Community Medicine offers comprehensive healthcare services like curative,

preventive and promotive services at Urban Health Centre Dharavi and Rural Health Training

Centre, Vasind. More than 18,476 adult patients and 1,893 pediatric patients were given

healthcare services in the last year in UHTC, Dharavi. 23,582 beneficiaries were provided

Comprehensive healthcare services at Rural Health Training Centre, Vasind. The Department is

also playing a major role in planning and coordinating health camps.

Integrated Disease Surveillance Program is another crucial activity that is for reporting all the

patients with monsoon related disease and specifically Covid-19, since 2020. Total 1647 Covid-

19 positive patients were admitted and treated in L.T.M.M.C. & G.H. from 1 st January 2021 to

31 st December 2021. Total 1118 Covid-19 positive patients were discharged from L.T.M.M.C. &

G.H. in that duration.

To combat Covid-19 disease and as a part of control measures against Covid-19, vaccines

have been launched all over India and in L.T.M.M.C. & G.H, Sion vaccination drive started from

16 January 2021. Total 1,85,859 beneficiaries were given vaccines from Covid Vaccination

Centre, Sion from 16 th January 2021 to 31 st January 2021.

Along with these port-folios; Department of Community Medicine also looks after Internship

program of LTMMC & GH, Sion-22 as well as conducts various Health check-up and

Emergency camps.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES: 1. Training Program for Covid Vaccination was conducted by

MCGM (F South) in co-ordination with Department of Community Medicine for Health Care

Workers, Data entry Operators and Volunteers of Vaccination Centre. 2. Training for Covid


Vaccination was also given at the institutional level to Resident Doctors, Intern Doctors, Nursing

Students.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Department of Community Medicine was involved as a Verification team in verification of TB

free claim under sub-national verification in two districts i.e Centenary and Ghatkopar districts

from February 2021 to March 2021. The Department of Community Medicine also did Sero-

Survey-5 of MCGM to detect presence of Covid antibody levels over the period of 6 months.


Mahad Flood Medical Relief Camp By LTMG Hospital team

Due to the heavy rainfall in the month of July many parts of the Maharashtra state were facing

flood situations. The districts like Raigad, Kolhapur, Sangli and others were particularly affected.

Raigad district had seen landslides and severe flood in some of the areas, where many people lost

their lives and livelihoods. Mahad city and Chiplun also saw severe rainfall and flooding in the

entire city for over two days from 21/07/2021 to 23/07/2021 causing extensive loss of precious

lives, belongings and livelihoods in the unfortunate incident.... Read more

High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) session was organised for Anganwadi Workers in collaboration with Department of Radiology, LTMMC, Sion and ICDS, GOI at Urban Health Centre, Dharavi on 23rd, 25th & 26th of April, 2019, regarding management of Menorrhagia due to Uterine Fibroids by HIFU as a treatment modality, conducted by Dr Vivek, Associate Professor, Department of Radiology and attended by Dr Pallavi Shelke ( Associate Professor).

RNTCP  Training for RMOs, SMOs n Interns was conducted by Dr. Pallavi Shelke, (Associate Professor) under the guidance of Dr. Seema Bansode-Gokhe (Prof. &  Headon 7th September 2018  (1.30 to 4.30 pm) at  lecture hall , first floor, Dept. of Community Medicine. Participated as Chief Guest in a programme organized by MDAG and MCGM for advocacy and stigma discrimination on HIV/ AIDS. This programme was organized for health care promotion.

Nutrition Mela was organized in collaboration with ICDS project Dharavi and Food and science dept of BMN college, SNDT unit, Wadala. Twenty students of dietetics participated in Nutritious recipe competition. Total 55 Aanganwadi workers participated in the programme and answered quiz related to balanced diet and healthy cooking habits on 7 th September 2018. The judge for the competition were Dr. Seema S. Bansode Gokhe. Mr. Tirath sir CDO at Dharavi, generated donation of Rs. 10,000 for the nutrition mela, which was very successful programme. The programme was successful by the efforts of Dr. Pallavi (RMO), Dr. Deepak (RMO), Dr. Divya (SMO)

 

Leprosy and skin disease survey in collaboration with National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) and Bombay Leprosy Project (NGO) from 24 th September to 9 th October 2018.

 

PG MUHS university seminar on the topic was conducted on ‘Doctor-Patient relationship’ under the guidance of Dr Manissha Srivastav Assoc. Prof.  on 18th September.

The Department of Community Medicine along with Mumbai Breastfeeding Promotion Committee (MBPC) conducted the World Breastfeeding Week 2018 Inaugaration programme on 2nd August 2018 at Main Auditorium of LTMMC & GH Sion. Dr. Archana Bhalerao, Chairperson, Public Health Committee MCGM was the Chief Guest of the program. Dr Avinash Supe, Director (ME & MH) & Dean, Seth GSMC & KEMH and Dr Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer, MCGM were the Guests of Honor. Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life was the theme for 2018.Dr. Seema S. Bansode Gokhe Prof. & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine , President MBPC was the Chief Coordinator and Dr. Sujata Pol, Jt. Secretary was the joint coordinator of the program. The program was a grand success.

 

Three Breastfeeding awareness sessions were conducted by the Resident Medical Officers of  UHTC, Dharavi under the guidance of Dr. Seema Bansode-Gokhe (Prof. & Head), Dr. Vijaykumar Singh, (Prof.- Addl), Dr.Pallavi Shelke, (Associate Professor), Dr. Payal Laad (Assistant Professor), Mr. Ram Meghare (CDO), Mr. Tirath Singh Arora (MSW) at Immunisation OPD, Urban Health Training Centre, Dharavi on 01/08/2018. This program benefited approximately 20 women.

 

NCD training program & A training program on IYCN was conducted for ASHA workers on 30.08.18 at RHTC Vashind   Residents posted at RHTC did the job of training under the guidance of Dr. Seema S. Bansode Gokhe Prof. & Head, Dr Vijaykumar Singh,Prof. (Addl) & Dr Satish , Asst. Prof. Dept. of Community Medicine.

 

The cultural program  ‘RIMZIM’ was held on 10th August at Main Auditorium of LTMMC SIon. Dr Pallavi Shelke and Dr Sujata Pol did the performance in the program. It was very well appreciated.

 

Dept. of Community Medicine provided Medical support Mumbai Ultra –The 12 hour Run which was held on 15th August 2018. There were 30 doctors present at the site. There were 400 runners, however, no casualty was reported. The support was highly appreciated by the organizers. Dr Pallavi Shelke, Assoc. Dr Vijaykumar Singh, Prof. (Addl) organized MUHS approved Basic Research methodology workshop for Residents of LTMMC from 5th to 7th August 2018 and took the sessions.

 

PG MUHS university seminar on the topic was conducted on ‘Health Policy :Processing and Implementation’ under the guidance of Dr D.H Rao Assoc. Prof.  on 18th  August.

 

An educational visit to ‘Epidemiology cell, City bureau, Central malaria Lab’ at Kasturba Hospital was held on 23rd August for the PG students of Community Medicine under the guidance of Dr. Seema S. Bansode Gokhe Prof. & Head & Dr Pallavi Shelke, Assoc. Prof. Dept. of Community Medicine. Dr Sujata Pol coordinated the visit and accompanied the students.

Dr Tipre the head of IEC dept. of MCGM organized the training on “Cause of Death” for staff at Sion between 17-19 January 2018. Dr B B Adsul & Dr Payal coordinated for conducting the same. All staff from Community Medicine dept. attended the Training.

National Anti-Leprosy Day was observed at UHTC Adult OPD in collaboration with Bombay Leprosy Project. Posters, Display of rehabilitative measures like slings, MCR chappals, Health education imparted to OPD attendees and their relatives.  on 30.01.2018

Dr Pallavi Shelke was the speaker for the topic on Informed Consent Documentation GCP workshop, NiTi, Independent Ethics committee and Samiksha, Institutional Ethics Committee, Thane on 27.01.2018 at Hotel Maria, Majiwada Naka, Thane.

Dr Vijay Singh was the Convener & Dasi Rao was the internal examiner for MUHS III/Ist MBBS practical exam held on 8-11th January 2018. Dr Sujata Pol worked as expert in the above exam.

o)   Was the chief Guest for the program of International Womens day organised by School of      Nursing on 8th March and also judged the poster competition of nursing students on the occasion of International Womens day on 7th March.

p)   Was the judge for Poster competition in the TRINITY on 3rd March 2017.

q)   Dr Seema S. Bansode Gokhe, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine along with Dr D.H. Rao Asso. Prof. was Panel Expert in the Seminar on National Health Policy organised by Dept of Community Medicine of Seth GS medical college Parel on 22nd April 2017.

r)    Headed the team of health staff of Sion hospital for Multi-speciality Mega Health camp on 16th April 2017, at Ghatkopar.

s)   Judged the essay competition for nursing students on occasion of World Health Day organized by Dept of Community Medicine held on 6 April 2017

t)    Participated in the World Bank study of the World Bank group, accessing Public Health services of living Life project- Global Indicators group- Development Economics. The indicator studied were regarding requirement, processor, time and cost of getting the things done in the public sector in the cross-country contacts which include assess the health services.

u)   Was invited as a panel export for conducting interviews for a medical officer for ART OPD by paediatrics department. And also reviewed the project of DPH student.

v)   Was selected as a president of Mumbai Breast feeding promotion committee of India for 2 years on 12th June 2017.

w)  Invited to be a member on the Advisory board of Adverse Drug Reactions Bulletin at LTMMC & GH on 13th June 2017.

x)   Worked as MUHS Internal Examiner for DPH Practical Exam at TNMC Nair Hospital on 19 & 20th June 2017.

y)   MegaHealth check-up camp was arranged at Tansa Dam for BMC workers on 24th June 2017 under guidance of Dr. Seema Bansode-Gokhe Prof.& Head Dept. of Community Medicine & Dr. Suleman Merchant Dean LTMMC & GH, Sion Mr. Ram Meghare mobilised sponsorship from Rotary Club.150 raincoats were distributed to workers.

Dr. Seema Bansode-Gokhe (Prof. & Head, dept. of Community Medicine)

i.        Was invited as External examiner for conducting PhD Thesis Viva at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Devnar, Mumbai.

ii.        Worked as Co-ordinator at institutional level for election duties of Election Commission of India as per instructions of Dean.

iii.        Worked on project “Adolescent Health Inititaive” (Rashtriya Kishori Swasthya Karyakram) of GOI to mainstream in Public Health care delivery system of MCGM in collaboration with SNEHA.

 

Dr. Pallavi Shelke (Associate Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine)

i.        Conducted geriatric health profile survey as a part of multi-disciplinary scientific research entitled "An epidemiological study of Sarcopenia in Geriatric population (60-70 years) and evaluation of nutritional and physical rehabilitative package for Sarcopenia in an urban slum."

Dr Seema S. Bansode Gokhe (Prof. & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine)

i.        Organized International yoga day on 21st June 2019 in collaboration with dept. of physiotherapy, for staff members, nursing staffs and nursing students, OT, PT students, resident officers at institutional levels. Plan of action was prepared for conducting yoga activities regularly for all the staffs, undergraduates, postgraduate students, nursing students, OT, PT students, paramedical and administrative staffs of hospital and medical college submitted to dean sir in view of international yoga day celebration and to have it as a regular activity throughout the year.

ii.        Appointed as incharge of Sports & Extra-curricular activity and member of Sub-Curricular committee under CISP.

iii.        Conducted MUHS examinations of M.D. Community Medicine on 13th and 14th June 2019. Dr Sujata Pol, Asst. Prof.was expert for the exam.

iv.        Meeting with SNEHA NGO Representatives on 27th June 2019 regarding adolescent health project (RKBSK) and its future progress for further collaboration with Public Health Department MCGM.

v.        Attended meeting on Maternal Near Miss Review on 18th June 2019 in department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as Public Health expert.
